the lost kitty

Kitty was a little orange calico cat that had three sisters and two brothers.  Kitty, her mother and brothers and sisters all lived with the Jones family.  Kitty’s mother lived with Mr. and Mrs. Jones for a long time before Kitty was even born, so the Jones family knew they would keep Kitty’s mother, but decided they would not be able to keep all the kittens and would have to give them away to new families when they got big enough.

When the kittens got big enough, the Jones family asked around to see if other families would want to take a kitten and they had no problems finding good homes for all of them, except Kitty. Looked like Kitty would be staying with them and her mother.  Kitty was so happy that she got to stay with her mother and the Jones family.  She really liked the house she was living in and the Jones family were very nice people so she knew this was the best place she could be.  How lucky she was.

One day, Kitty got out the kitchen door and ran into the backyard.  This was the first time she was out of the house, and she didn’t know anything about the backyard.  She was so surprised to see how big the backyard was.  Everything was new to kitty.  She saw the big garage that the Jones’ family put their cars in.  She walked over to the garage and went in through the open door.   She looked around and even though everything looked interesting, she was a little scared because this was the first time that she was out of the house. She spent a lot of time in the garage just looking at all the new things and wondering what they all were used for.

After a while, she decided to go out of the garage and look around the yard some more.  Kitty walked to the end of the Jones’ yard and crawled under a fence into a field.  She walked for a long time until she started to get tired and hungry.  She decided it was time to head home, but which direction was home?  She had not been paying attention and now she couldn’t remember how to get home.  She sat in the shade of a nearby tree and started crying but then thought that she better just dry her eyes and work on finding her way home before nightfall.

She walked and walked and then walked some more.  All she saw were trees and grassy fields.  Finally, she saw a house.  She thought that maybe the humans would be able to help her find her home.  As she walked toward the house, she saw sitting in the yard, a big white and black spotted dog.  She didn’t know if this was a friendly dog and maybe it would be better if she just tried to find another  house.  As she was wondering what to do, she didn’t see the dog as it walked up to her.  Now she was scared.  The dog sniffed her to find out who she was and Kitty noticed it was being very careful and gentle. Maybe this is a nice dog.

Kitty just stood perfectly still, not knowing what to do, when she heard a voice say, “Don’t be afraid.  I’m not going to hurt you.”  Kitty looked up and saw that it was the dog that was talking.  Kitty knew that cats could talk to other cats, but she didn’t know dogs could talk to cats too.  Kitty said to the dog, “I can talk too!”  The dog said, “That is great!”  Then he asked her where she was from.  She told him she was lost.  The dog said, “It’s okay, I’ll help you find your home, but it’s starting to get dark, so we should wait till morning to find your home.”  Kitty said, “I could really use your help.  Thank you so much.  And yes, it is getting dark, so we won’t be able to see too well if we leave now.”

The dog told Kitty to follow him and as they walked through the yard, Kitty saw a big red house. Kitty couldn’t figure out what kind of house that was because it wasn’t big enough for people to live in.  She walked over to the red house and peeked in the door. Inside she saw a big comfy bed covered in a blanket.  Next to the bed was a pile of half chewed dog bones and squeaky toys.  Outside the red house she saw a bowl of water and a big bowl of food.  She asked the dog if she could have a drink of water and he said, “Help yourself!  And if you are hungry, you can help yourself to my food bowl, but if you don’t like that, one of the kids left a box of cereal here this morning when they came out to visit me.  It’s real sugary and tastes great!”

Kitty said, “Thank you!  I am hungry.  That cereal sounds real good.”  They took turns sticking their nose into the cereal box and eating the sugary treats.  They finally both had their bellies full.  They sat back and talked about different things, like the families that they lived with, how many kids they got to play with.  They talked for a long time.  The dog really liked Kitty and Kitty really liked the dog.  They had a good time getting to know one another.  Kitty said, “We have been talking for a long time, but I still don’t know your name.”  The dog said, “Everyone calls me Spot because of all the spots I have.”  Kitty said, “That’s a very nice name.  I’m so happy that I ran into you.  You have been so kind and I am very thankful.”  “Thank you,” said Spot, “I think I’ll go to sleep now.”  “I’m tired too,” said Kitty, “but I am enjoying looking at all these stars in the sky.  I never saw them before except through the window of my house.  There are so many of them!”

The next morning, they both ate a little more cereal, then started on their trip.  When they got to the end of the yard, Spot asked Kitty which way she remembers coming in.  “I think my house is that way,” Kitty said while pointing north.  “Okay, then north it is.”  They walked and walked for a long, long time and they found nothing that looked familiar to Kitty.  Spot said, “We must be going the wrong way.  Looks like your house is not north.  It is getting dark so we better head back to my doghouse.  We can try going south early tomorrow and see if we can find your home.”  Kitty said, “That sounds good.  I am getting very tired.  Thank you Spot for helping me today.”  Spot said, “You are welcome.  I am sure if I needed your help, you would help me.”  Kitty said, “Absolutely!  Yes, I would help you.  You are my friend.”  Spot smiled and said, “You are my friend too!”  They walked back to Spot’s yard, ate some more cereal and fell fast asleep.

The next morning came very fast and Spot and Kitty were already up and getting ready to go on their hunt to find Kitty's house. Spot said, “This time we will head south and hopefully you will see things that look familiar to you.”  “I sure hope so,” said Kitty, “Although I have enjoyed being with you, I am starting to miss my Mom and my family.”  “I understand,” said Spot, “today will be the day we find your home.”  They walked in the opposite direction that they did the day before.  They walked and walked and just when it looked like that was the wrong direction, Kitty noticed a barn that she had seen before.  “Look!  That barn, I know that barn!  We are going in the right direction!”  They walked a little further and Kitty saw more farms and houses she recognized.  Then, up ahead, she saw her house.  She was so excited that they found her home that she ran as fast as her little paws could carry her to her house.

Kitty ran into the yard and there was the boy that always took care of her.  She meowed and he turned quickly to see where the sound came from.  His eyes lit up when he saw Kitty.  He ran over to her, picked her up and hugged her closely.  “Kitty, I am so glad you came back!”  He called to his Mom and Dad who were in the house to come out and when they did, they were also very happy to see Kitty had come home.  Kitty heard frantic meows and looked down to see her mother circling the boy’s legs to get a look at Kitty.  The boy let Kitty down so that her mother could welcome her home.  Her mother licked her head and pawed her head to let her know how happy she was that she returned.

Kitty noticed Spot standing over near the fence.  She walked over to him and started to meow.  Kitty’s family walked over and looked at Spot.  The boy looked at his Mom and Dad and said, “Do you think this dog brought Kitty home?”  His Mom and Dad said they think maybe the dog did help Kitty find her way home.  “What a good dog you are!” the boy said to Spot.  He ran into the house to get a bowl of water for Spot and a couple pieces of bacon leftover from breakfast.  “Here boy, this is a treat for you for bringing Kitty home.”  Spot gobbled up the bacon and drank a lot of water.

He then walked over to Kitty and it looked to the boy and his parents that the dog was saying goodbye to the kitten, but that couldn’t be because animals don’t talk, right?  Spot licked Kitty on her head and said, “I have to be getting back home before it gets too dark.”  “Would it be okay if I come to visit you once in a while,” said Kitty to Spot.  “I would really like that, as long as you promise me one thing.”  “What’s that?” asked Kitty.  “Promise you won’t get lost!”  Kitty laughed and said, “I won’t now that I know the way.

Spot went out the gate and headed for his home, very happy that he was able to help Kitty find her home.  Spot also wanted all the children reading this story to know that if they ever need help, just let him know and he will try to help you like he did for Kitty.  Bye for now!
